Below you’ll find a list of the places and experiences that I believe are worth sharing. While I loved Funchal for it’s unique atmosphere, I still consider that the true beauty of Madeira lies outside of the city.
1. Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmer’s Market)
The farmers market is the largest market on Madeira Island and one of the most vibrant places to visit in Funchal. It’s filled with exotic fruits that you can taste or buy, allongside stalls selling fresh fish, local products, and souvenirs.
The market serves as a central meeting point for local farmers and fisherman, offering visitors a glimpse into the daily life of the island. Check on Google Maps for the opening hours.
2. Visit the Gardens in Madeira
One of the best things to do in Madeira is explore its lush and exotic gardens. There are two main gardens to choose from, but I only had time to visit the Monte Palace Tropical Garden.
If you’re short on time and can only visit one, I’d definitely recommend Monte Palace. It’s larger than the Madeira Botanical Garden, and offers more experiences.
Monte Palace Tropical Garden & Carreiros do Monte (toboggan ride)
The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is located high above Funchal in the Monte area. Historically, the site was once a hotel (Monte Palace Hotel) before being transformed into the garden you see today.
You can reach Monte with the Funchal Cable Car(check the official site for prices and opening hours) up to Monte Palace Tropical Garden.
Walking through the garden is such a peaceful experience. You’ll find tropical plants, exotic flowers, tranquil ponds, and little winding pathways that make you want to keep exploring. Along the way, there are amazing panoramic views over Funchal that are totally worth stopping for.
A short walk from the garden is the beautiful Church of Our Lady of Monte. It is definitely worth taking some time to visit and enjoy the views.
Afterward, you can make your way back down using the famous Carreiros do Monte (toboggan ride). It might sound unusual, but it’s actually a traditional way people used to travel downhill! Sitting in a wicker toboggan and sliding downhill the streets is such a unique experience, it’s a bit touristy now, but still totally worth it.
After that, you can take your time and walk back down toward the city center, enjoying the views along the way.

Bring cash for the toboggan ride payment and tips, which are generally expected at the end of the ride.
Jardim Madeira Botanical Garden
I didn’t have the opportunity to visit the Madeira Botanical Garden myself, but it’s another popular attraction located on a hillside above Funchal. It’s known for its beautifully landscaped gardens, colorful flower displays, and extensive collection of plant species.
If you’re really into botany or prefer something a bit more structured, this may be a great option too.
3. Walk around the city center and its exotic parks
One of the most relaxing things to do in Funchal is simply wander through the city center and soak up the atmosphere. Allow yourself two to three hours to explore on foot, even without entering museums or monuments.

5. Walk along the promenade to Câmara de Lobos
Take a stroll along the coastal promenade towards Câmara de Lobos, one of Madeira’s most picturesque fishing villages.
Once you arrive, you’ll find a relaxed atmosphere, colorful fishing boats, and plenty restaurants serving fresh seafood. It’s the perfect spot to try some fresh fish dishes and soak in the local vibe.
6. Túnel das Poças do Gomes
Túnel das Poças do Gomes is a small but fascinating tunnel in Funchal. While it may not be one of the city’s most famous attractions, it offers an interesting quick stop during your walk.
7. Doca do Cavacas Natural Pools
Doca do Cavacas Natural Pools is a beautiful spot to slow down and enjoy the ocean. Formed by volcanic rock, these natural volcanic pools provide a unique swimming experience, with clear water and stunning views toward the Atlantic.

8. Go Whale And Dolphins Watching
One of the highlights of visiting Funchal is the opportunity to go whale and dolphin watching directly from the city.
For me, it was really a beautiful experience and one I would recommend. While sightings can never be guaranteed, the boat trip itself is worthwhile. You’ll get to admire Madeira’s dramatic coastline from the sea and many tours include a swimming stop along the way.

You can take these tours from Marina do Funchal or Marina da Calheta, and they usually last around 3 hours and many include a stop swimming, so don’t forget your swimsuit.
