Saigon, also known as Ho Chi Minh City, is Vietnam’s most metropolitan and modern city. Here, you’ll find plenty of things to see and do, from famous historical landmarks to lively streets, markets, temples, and nightlife.

How to get to Saigon
The most convenient way to get to Saigon is by plane. Whether you are arriving from another country or travelling from another part of Vietnam, flying is usually the fastest and easiest option. Be sure to choose always Vietnam Airlines as I consider the best company.
How many days to stay in Ho Chi MInh City?
If you are visiting Vietnam for 2 weeks or 16 days, I would suggest staying in Saigon for no more than three days. But if you have more time, I suggest booking a day trip outside Saigon because the beauty of the country is in the countryside.
Where to stay in Saigon
Saigon is divided into several districts, and choosing the right area can make your visit much easier. For first-time visitors, I think the best area to stay is District 1.
Best 11 Things To Do in Saigon for First Timer’s
Even though I don’t consider Saigon my favourite place to visit in Vietnam, I still think it is worth visiting at least once to experience this completely different side of the country.
Most of the main tourist attractions are located in District 1, District 3, and District 5, making it relatively easy to explore several places during your visit.
Nguyen Hue Walking Street
The main walking street is situated in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City. Along the street, you’ll have the opportunity to visit more main sites. For example: Café Apartment, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, and Saigon Opera House.
Old Post Office & Send a Postcard Home
One of the most beautiful activities is to send a postcard home to your family and friends. It became a tourist attraction because of the Old Post Office, as it was built during the French colonial period and became a historical landmark.
Notre-Dame of Saigon
One of the most important landmarks of Ho Chi Minh City, situated directly in the heart of the city, Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon was built between 1877 and 1880 during the French colonial period.
Ben Tanh Market
One of the most popular markets in Saigon is Ben Thanh Market. It still operates as a market, and here you can buy the souvenirs you want to take home. Be careful, as there are narrow corridors, and it can be very crowded and hot during the day.
Nguyen Van Binh Book Street
Just a short walk from the Old Post Office, Nguyen Van Binh is a street full of bookshops and cafés. Here, you’ll also have the opportunity to buy postcards. Unfortunately, I didn’t find books in English.
Mariamman Hindu Temple
Built in the late 19th century, the temple became a well-known attraction because of the architecture of the building.
Night Out on Bui Vien
The city’s well-known street of clubs and bars. Here, you’ll see a totally different side of the city. It was not my favourite, but I walked along the street twice to get to know this part of the city. It is very noisy and lively.
Tân Định Church or Pink Church
Builders constructed the Catholic Pink Church between 1870 and 1876 during the French colonial period. Later, they painted all the exterior walls light pink, which made the church well known. Situated right in District 3, it became one of the most Instagrammable spots.
Ngoc Hoang Pagoda – Jade Emperor Pagoda
Situated in District 1, Jade Emperor Pagoda is a Taoist, Buddhist, and Confucian pagoda with beautiful architecture.
Saigon Chinatown
Saigon’s Chinatown is situated in District 5 and has many other tourist attractions to explore. If you stay for more than three days, I think you’ll be able to visit this side of the city as well.
A Day Trip from Saigon
As I said, I will say it again: the most beautiful part of the country is outside the big cities. Even if every place has its плюses and minuses, you’ll see some amazing and unique landscapes along the way.

The most popular time to visit Saigon is during the dry season, from November to April. However, Saigon can be visited throughout the year. During the rainy season, from approximately May to October, heavy rain showers are common, but they often do not last all day.
Even though Saigon wasn’t my favorite city in Vietnam, I would still recommend visiting it. Saigon is very different from other destinations in the country and offers a unique mix of history, culture, modern buildings, busy streets, and local life. I think it is worth spending at least a few days here, especially if it is your first time visiting Vietnam. There are many interesting places to explore, and the city is also a great base for visiting attractions outside Saigon.
Saigon is generally considered safe for tourists, but you should always be aware of your surroundings. Traffic can be overwhelming, especially when crossing the streets, and petty theft such as bag snatching can occur in busy areas. Keep your belongings close to you and avoid displaying valuable items unnecessarily.
I would not recommend drinking tap water in Saigon. Instead, drink bottled or filtered water during your stay.
The easiest way to get around Saigon is by using Grab, especially if you are travelling longer distances. Grab cars and motorbikes are widely used throughout the city. You can also walk around central areas such as District 1.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport is located relatively close to the city centre. You can reach your accommodation by Grab, taxi, airport bus, or private transfer. Travel time depends heavily on traffic.
Visa requirements depend on your nationality and can change, so always check the latest entry requirements before travelling. Vietnam offers visa exemptions for certain nationalities and also has an e-visa system for eligible travellers.
Saigon can be a very affordable destination, especially compared with many major cities around the world. Local food, Grab rides, and budget accommodation can be inexpensive, although costs can increase if you choose luxury hotels, rooftop bars, or organised tours.
Final Thoughts on Things to Do in Saigon
Saigon was one of those destinations that took me a little by surprise. It is loud, busy, chaotic, and very different from the places in Vietnam that I personally enjoyed the most. For that reason, it wasn’t my favorite destination on this trip.
But looking back, I am still glad that I visited. Saigon showed me a completely different side of Vietnam and made my itinerary feel more complete. From the busy streets and endless traffic to the cafés, historical places, and vibrant atmosphere, it is a city that you really have to experience for yourself.
You might love Saigon, or you might prefer the quieter destinations in Vietnam, just like I did. Either way, I think it is worth spending a few days here and deciding for yourself.
