Planning to hike in Madeira? All classified PR trails now require advance registration/reservation through SIMplifica. Most visitors pay €4.50 per trail, and you should check the official trail status immediately before your hike because routes can be restricted or closed.
Book before you go - don't leave this until the morning of your hike.
Where to Stay in Madeira for 10 Days?
It's hard to say which is the best area to stay in Madeira, as it depends a lot on what you want to do during your trip. Here are my recommendations based on the type of experience you're looking for:
- Best area for first-time visitors: Funchal, the island's main city, with the widest choice of restaurants, accommodation, and attractions and easy access to other parts of Madeira;
- Best for hiking: São Vicente / Santana - both are great bases if hiking and exploring Madeira's mountainous areas are your main activities;
- Best for beaches: Calheta - a better choice if you want to spend more time by the sea;
- Best for nightlife & restaurants: Funchal - Because it's the island's main city, here are the best pubs, bars, and restaurants.
- Best if you want to stay close to Funchal: Câmara de Lobos offers a quieter alternative to staying in the city while remaining within easy reach of Funchal.
My personal recommendation: If this is your first trip to Madeira, I would recommend basing yourself in Funchal. It's the most convenient option whether you're renting a car or relying on public transportation. I stayed in Caniço, which was beautiful, but getting to Funchal was sometimes frustrating, especially because of the difficulty of finding parking.
Do You Need a Car in Madeira?
For this 10-day itinerary, I recommend renting a car, as it gives you the flexibility to reach viewpoints, villages, and natural attractions. Keep in mind that Madeira's roads can be very steep, narrow and winding, so it's worth choosing a reliable car and opting for full insurance for extra peace of mind. Day 1: Arrive in Madeira: Explore Funchal
After your flight, take it easy and enjoy a relaxed walk through Funchal. Then, head along the main streets to experience your first impressions of the island.
Afterward, you can enjoy the charming and cobblestone streets and along the way you'll see some of the city's highlights:

- Palácio de São Lourenço;
- Jardim Municipal do Funchal;
- Parque de Santa Catarina;

These sights are close to one another, so you can easily visit them all in a short amount of time. I highly recommend exploring the city again on the weekend nights. Whether you're already in a good mood or not, you will definitely have a great time.

Day 2: Exploring Funchal & Monte Palace Tropical Garden
The goal of this day is to recover after your arrival in Madeira while exploring some of Funchal's main highlights. Don't worry if you don't manage to visit all of them, you'll have some relaxed days ahead to revisit any spots you missed. If you're short on time, you can jump directly to the Quick Summary of Madeira Itinerary Day 2 below.

Mercado dos Lavradores
Begin your day at the famous Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers Market), located in the heart of Funchal. This charming and picturesque market, inaugurated in 1940, has been at the center of local life ever since. Check on Google Maps for the opening hours.
Here, you can discover a wide variety of fresh and tropical fruits, flowers, fish and local products, and you even have the option to buy some. Because the vendors are very friendly, you will have the opportunity to test some fruits. The market is also known for its vibrant stalls and azulejos tiles depicting Madeiran traditions.
Useful Tips:
Prices here tend to be higher than in smaller villages, so if you're on a budget, consider visiting other local markets around the island.
Monte Palace Tropical Garden & Carreiros do Monte (toboggan ride)
Next, take the Funchal Cable Car (check the official site for prices and opening hours) up to Monte Palace Tropical Garden. The ride offers stunning views of the city and the bay.
In the garden, walk along the cobbled paths lined with blooming trees and exotic flowers, surrounded by lush greenery. Don't miss the Chinese Garden, filled with statues and bamboo groves, which creates a peaceful and exotic atmosphere. Along the way, you'll discover several viewpoints with impressive panoramas of Funchal.
The visit typically takes about half a day. Monte Palace itself is known for its striking architecture. Unfortunately, the interior is not open to the public.
Near the garden, you'll see locals descending the hill on Carreiros do Monte (toboggan ride). There are plenty of signs to guide you. It will be a unique journey on wicker sledges, steered by two men using only the heels of their shoes. This is a truly unique Madeira experience.
From the toboggan endpoint, it's about a 30-minute walk back to Funchal city center. Strolling through the streets gives you the chance to admire the architecture and vibrant atmosphere.
Useful Tip:
Bring cash for the toboggan ride payment and tips, which are generally expected at the end of the ride.
Blandy's Old Wine Lodge & Explore Funchal
End your day at Blandy's Old Wine Lodge, where you can learn about Madeira's famous wines and enjoy a tasting session. It's the perfect way to finish a day full of culture, scenery, and local experiences. At the end of the day, you can enjoy exploring Funchal.

Day 3: Levada Hikes & West Coast Village
After getting familiar with the city, it's time to explore Madeira's mountainous landscapes and its charming west coast villages. This day of the itinerary will take you through some of the island's most iconic highlights.
PR6 Trail - Levada Das 25 Fontes & Levada do Risco
Madeira is famous for its lavada walks, scenic trails that follow irrigation channels through forest and waterfalls. If you're visiting the island for hiking, check out my guide to the best hikes in Madeira. Therefore, this day will be dedicated to discovering the PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes and PR6.1 Levada do Risco trails.
Parking is available next to ER105, exactly where the trail begins to Casa de Abrigo do Rabacal(open between 10AM - 5PM).
The trail is considered moderate, well-maintained, and quite popular. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of forest vegetation. The lush greenery gives this part of the island an exotic, tropical feel.
- Be sure to stop first at the viewpoint of the Risco Waterfall, which offers stunning views.
- And continue to Levada das 25 Fontes, leading down to the 25 Fountains Waterfall. The crystal-clear water and surrounding scenery are absolutely breathtaking.
Optional: PR6.6 Tunnel do Rabacal
If you're curious about the Casa de Abrigo do Rabacal, you can also explore PR6.6 Tunnel do Rabacal, a short trail leading to a tunnel. Be careful not to continue the trail to the end.

Now if it's still early, it's time to relax. So I would recommend one of those two beaches: Praia da Calheta or Praia da Ponta do Sol.
Praia da Calheta is one of the few sandy beaches in Madeira because of its imported sand from Morocco. The water is calmer here because the beach is protected by breakwaters, making it ideal for swimming.
Praia da Ponta do Sol is a small, natural beach with volcanic pebbles. It has clear water and a peaceful atmosphere, perfect if you prefer a more natural and quiet setting. I also think this option is better for snorkeling.
Optional: RB2 Vereda do Nateiro (Banana Route)
Whatever you decide, if you still have energy, stop for a short walk through banana plantations. The hike is located in Madalena do Mar. Is an easy, circular hike and usually takes 30 - 45 minutes.
Ponta do Sol - Sunset at Cascata dos Anjos
Ponta do Sol is known for her products of bananas and sugar cane, but also for the famous Cascata dos Anjos waterfall. Be careful to arrive just in time to catch the sunset. Watching the sun's rays dance across the sky, painting it in a variety of vibrant colors, was truly magical. The waterfall itself is stunning, and the moment we captured was something unforgettable.

Day 4: Watching Dolphins & Curral das Freiras & Pico de Areeiro
The 4th day of the Madeira itinerary will be a more relaxed day, where you can enjoy the island's views from the sea. The day starts with a trip out to the sea, giving you the incredible opportunity to watch dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. At the end of the day, you'll witness one of the most beautiful sunsets you've ever seen.
Watching Dolphins and Whales
Watching dolphins and whales along the coast is one of Madeira's most popular attractions. The experience is truly magical! If you're lucky enough, you might encounter two different species of dolphins, and one of them is often playful and friendly, swimming right alongside the boat. While sightings can never be guaranteed, chances are very high that you'll see at least some dolphins. Make sure to pack your swimsuit, because there is a stop for anyone who wants to dive into the crystal-clear waters for a refreshing swim.
Boat Trips & Info
You can take these tours from Marina do Funchal or Marina da Calheta, and they usually last around 3 hours and many include a stop swimming, so don't forget your swimsuit. Here are the lists with the agencies. Try to book an early morning tour to make the most if the rest of your day. Be aware to check the reviews of the agencies before you book. You can either book online or through local travel agencies in Funchal.
Miradouro da Eira do Serrado & Curral das Freiras
If you have energy and time after your morning activity, you can make your way to the Curral das Freiras, also known as Nun's Valley. Hidden deep within Madeira's rugged mountains, this secluded village once served as refuge for the nuns of the Santa Clara Convent, who fled here to escape pirate raids on the island.
Once you arrive, you'll immediately notice how peaceful it feels compared to the coast. Surrounded by dramatic peaks, the village has a quite, almost timeless atmosphere. The quaint village sits between stony mountain peaks and feels like something out of a postcard, making for a peaceful and serene stop, just a short drive from Funchal.
After exploring the village, make sure to stop at the breathtaking Miradouro da Eira do Serrado(location: here), where you can enjoy panoramic views over the valley. Right next to the viewpoint, is the Eira do Serrado Hotel & Spa, where you can enjoy a drink or meal.
Sunset at Pico de Arieiro
As if the day couldn't get any better, you can end it with a spectacular sunset at Pico de Arieiro(location: here), one of the highest points on the island. The views from here are absolutely breathtaking. With the sky ablaze and the clouds dancing around us, you will be left in awe. By the end of this Madeira itinerary, you might just become a sunset chasers. This will be one of the best moments from the 10-day Madeira itinerary.

Day 5: Levada do Caldeiro Verde & Santana Village
This day is all about one of the most picturesque hikes in Madeira. Unfortunately, I personally missed this trail, but that mistake helped shape what I think is one of the best ways to plan this day.
PR9 Levada do Caldeiro Verde
Start your day early with PR9 Levada do Caldeiro Verde, a moderately easy trail.
The hike begins near the traditional village of Santana, in the Queimadas Forest Park. The path is mostly flat, but don't underestimate it. It typically takes 6-7 hours round trip. Along the way, you'll pass through tunnel, waterfalls, and dense greenery, making it one of the most scenic walks on the island.

Santana Village
After the hike, head to the one of the highlights of the island. In Santana are the traditional, iconic houses. These colorful, triangular cottages are made of wood, with thatched roofs of wheat and rye. They're simple yet full of charm, really a must-see if you're in the area. The Santana house is located here.
Miradouro do Guindaste & Teleferico Rocha do Navio
If you still have energy, head to Miradouro do Guindaste. The viewpoint features a unique glass platform, giving you can look through for a thrilling view of the landscape below. It's such a cool experience, especially if you like a bit of an adrenaline rush!
The Teleferico Rocha do Navio was used to connect the top to the shore, but as of recent years, it's no longer operational. Even though it remains more of a viewpoint experience. Rocha do Navio(Ship Rock) is a hidden gem that not many tourists seem to know about.
Optional: PR11 - Levadas dos Balcões
To end the day, you have an option to check out PR11, Levadas dos Balcões, it's an easy hike through a greenery landscape. The view from there can be very stunning, be aware to catch a beautiful weather. This trek will take around 1h. The parking place is located here.

Day 6: Fanal Forest & The Wild North Coast
This day is dedicated to exploring the north and northwest part of Madeira. Hopefully, you'll catch the ancient forest misty. Afterwards, head to the one of the steepest cable car from Europe, Teleferico das Achadas da Cruz. You'll finish the day by relaxing at the natural volcanic pools Porto Moniz or Seixal Beach.
Fanal Forest
Start early and head to Fanal Forest(location: here) to have more chances to experience it's famous mystical fog. You can check weather forecasts and webcams in advance, but the atmosphere here is always special, with or without mist.
Fanal is part of the Laurisilva forest of Madeira, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Take your time to wander among the centuries-old laurel trees, it's perfect for a slow morning walk. Be sure to check also the most photogenic place, Fanal Witch Tree.
A visit usually takes around 1 to 2 hours, which leaves you plenty of time to explore other parts of the island during the day.
Useful Tip
Make sure to wear proper hiking shoes, and keep a change of clothes and shoes in your car. If it has rained recently or is raining at the moment, many trails can become very muddy.
Teleferico das Achadas da Cruz
After your visit at the Fanal Forest, continue your journey to the Teleferico das Achadas da Cruz. It will be a truly unique experience as it is the steepest cable car in Europe. The cobblestone beach below was wild and untouched, with waves and views that were absolutely breathtaking. The cable car operates between 8:00AM and 4:30PM, but it's always a good idea to check Google Maps or the official schedule for the most up-to-date information. If you go later in the day, it can get very crowded, and you may end up waiting in a long queue.
Optional: Porto Moniz
You can choose to spend the second part of the day in Porto Moniz, where you can relax in the famous Natural Swimming Pools. These volcanic pools are perfect place to relax while enjoying views of the wild Atlantic Ocean.
Alternatively, you can head directly Miradouro Ilheus da Ribeira da Janela and spend some time at Seixal Beach, a stunning spot on the north coast.
Miradouro Ilheus da Ribeira da Janela & Seixal Beach
On the road to Funchal, make a quick stop at Miradouro Ilheus da Ribeira da Janela. From here, you can admire the stunning rock formations. Then consider adding a stop at the beautiful Seixal Beach. It's one of the most famous beaches on the island, known for it's striking black volcanic sand and lush green cliffs.
Madeira Itinerary Day 6 - Quick Summary:

Day 7: Sao Lourenco Peninsula & South Coast
One of the most beautiful things about Madeira is how every part of the island feels completely different. This contrast is what makes it so unique. You can go from lush green forests to volcanic, desert-like landscapes in less than an hour.
This day is dedicated to exploring the most easternmost point of the island and relaxing along the south coast. If there's any attraction you missed earlier in your trip, this is also a good moment to include it.
PR 8 - Vereda da Ponta de Sao Lourenco
The PR8 Vereda da Ponta de Sao Lourenco offers a completely different side of Madeira. Along the trail, you'll encounter a more sandy, slippery, and rocky terrain, with striking red tones that make the landscape feel almost like Mars. It's truly an unforgettable experience.
The path follows cliff edges, so the midday sun can be intense, especially around midday. The best time to start the hike is in the early morning to avoid both the heat and the crowds. If possible, aim for sunrise as you'll be rewarded with incredible views and beautiful shifting colors as the light changes.
The hike takes around four hours(round trip). At the end of the trail, near the restaurant, you have the option to take a boat back to the starting point. However, hiking back is just as rewarding and offers more time to enjoy the scenery.

Later, head to Canico, where you can visit the iconic Cristo Rei statue. From here, you'll get beautiful views over the coastline.
Nearby, you'll find one of the islands nicest beaches perfect for relaxing after the hike. You can spend some time swimming, snorkeling or simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
To end the day, explore local shops and pick up some souvenirs for family and friends.

Day 8: Pico do Arieiro - Pico Ruivo
The hike between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo is considered one of the most spectacular trails in Madeira. It is a must see in a 10-day Madeira Itinerary.
Unfortunately, during my visit, the trail was partially closed due to damage caused by the August 2024 wildfires and was only open up to the mountain hut. It was sad to witness the impact of the fire, but at the same time, it was inspiring to see how nature was already beginning to recover.
Even with these limitations, the hike still offered countless panoramic views above the clouds. If the full trail is open during your visit, don't hesitate, this is truly one of the most beautiful hikes on the island and absolutely worth experiencing.

As the day before the last from our 10-day Madeira itinerary, head to the village of Câmara de Lobos, a charming fishing village. The village gets its name from the monk seals that once rested on the beach. Today, the area serves as an open-air boatyard where traditional boats are repaired and painted in bright colors. Maybe, you'll have the opportunity to explore vibrant streets decorated with art installations featuring pets and recycled materials that adorn the main street. There's also a statue of Winston Churchill, as he famously spent his summers here.
