But then I changed my mind, because I have so many beautiful photos of Madeira’s sunsets that it felt worth sharing them. For me, watching the sunset wasn’t originally on my itinerary. It happened naturally on my second day when I visited Cascata dos Anjos and had the opportunity to enjoy a beautifully colorful sky. Since then, I can confidently say that watching the sunset in Madeira is a hidden gem. The island offers truly breathtaking landscapes, and the golden light makes everything even more beautiful.
Whether the sky is crystal clear or partly covered with clouds, you’ll enjoy the view either way. In fact, a little cloud cover can make the sunsets even more special, with colors spreading across the sky in incredible ways. That’s something worth keeping in mind when planning your visit.

The sun sets down from the West, so the best sunset views are usually along Madeira’s west coast. Another great option is to watch the sunset from one of the island’s mountain peaks. The panoramic views from the top can be stunning. Always check the weather forecast before heading out. If the sky is completely overcast, the sunset may not be visible. But a few clouds can often create the most beautiful sunset colors.
Best Sunset Spots in Madeira for Golden Hour Landscape
I’ve selected only 5 sunset spots for this list. I visited several others, but they weren’t so beautiful as these locations. I’ve also included two places that I didn’t have the chance to experience at sunset myself. In my opinion, they could be special. Enjoy!
1. Pico do Arieiro: Madeira’s Best Sunset Spot for Mountain Views
The best spot to see the sunset is from one of its highest mountain peaks in Madeira. So far, Pico do Arieiro has offered me the most memorable sunset experience on the island.
I’ve seen the famous Stairway to Heaven trail how become even more unique during the golden hours. As I walked along the trail, I was surrounded by fluffy clouds moving around me. It was impossible not to feel both small and completely free. I’m sure you’ll feel the same.
This combination of scenery makes Pico do Arieiro one of the best sunset spots in Madeira, a hidden gem and a must-visit location for photographers and nature lovers alike.(location: here)
2. Cascata dos Anjos: A Hidden Sunset Spot in Madeira
Another unique location for watching the sunset is Cascata dos Anjos. While it’s a popular destination during the day, so by golden hour you can often enjoy the place with far fewer crowds.
The water cascading down the cliff, combined with the colorful sunset in the background, created a really great view. It was one of my favorite sunset experiences in Madeira, and I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary.
Cars are not allowed on the old road leading to Cascata dos Anjos, so you’ll need to walk to reach it. Along the way, take some time to enjoy the flowers, banana trees and the coastal scenery. During golden hour, the warm light makes everything look even more beautiful and definitely worth stopping.
3. Jardim do Mar: One of the Best Sunset Spots in Madeira by the Ocean
This sunset spot was simple, peaceful, and incredibly beautiful. Jardim do Mar(“Garden of the Sea“) has a unique atmosphere and is known as Madeira’s surfer village. Its charming waterfront promenade is the perfect place for an evening walk while watching the sun slowly disappear into the Atlantic Ocean.
For an even more relaxing experience, grab an iced tea or a beer. Then head to the pebble beach at the end of the promenade. Sitting by the ocean while enjoying the warm colors of the sunset is one of the best ways to end a day in Madeira.
If you’re looking for a more peaceful sunset experience away from busy viewpoints, Jardim do Mar is definitely one of the best spots on the island.
4. Miradouro Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela: A Dramatic Sunset Viewpoint in Madeira
Another promising sunset spot was Miradouro Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela, famous for its distinctive rock formations rising from the ocean. I believe this viewpoint has the potential to offer a truly spectacular sunset, especially when the weather conditions are perfect and the sky is clear.
Unfortunately, during my visit, the weather wasn’t on our side, so I didn’t get the chance to experience the sunset at its best. However, if you’re luckier than I was, you might witness one of the beautiful sunset on the island. Watching the sun set behind these formation sea stacks would certainly make for an unique view.
5. Sunset on a Cruise: A Unique Way to Experience Madeira’s Best Sunsets
One of the most special ways to experience a sunset in Madeira is from the water. The idea to watch the island’s coastline glow in the golden evening light while sailing across the Atlantic is an experience many travelers consider a highlight of their trip. Unfortunately, our trip was cancelled due to bad weather.
If you have the time, it’s definitely worth considering. Several tour operators offer sunset cruises, while some day trips to the Desertas Islands also include the opportunity to enjoy the sunset on the return journey.
Whether you choose a dedicated sunset cruise or a longer boat excursion, seeing Madeira from the sea during golden hours is an experience worth adding to your itinerary.

You can take these tours from Marina do Funchal or Marina da Calheta, and they usually last around 3 hours and many include a stop swimming, so don’t forget your swimsuit.
