Best 12 Things to Do on Madeira Island

Madeira offers some of the best things to do in Madeira, from greenery, scenic hiking trails to ocean adventures and charming towns.

1. Hiking – one of the best things to do in Madeira 🙂

Madeira is famous for it’s beautiful hiking and Levada Trails. There are so many that I can’t list them all here. Although I didn’t get the chance to hike myself due to the 2024 fires, I’m still including them here because they’re must-dos, and for sure I’ll definitely come back for the ones I missed. But don’t worry though, I’ve done the research and will share all the essential details with you.

I’ll start with the trails I’ve personally hiked and loved, and finish with those I haven’t done yet but highly recommend.

Important Update for Hikers(2026)

Hiking regulations in Madeira have changed in 2026, so always check official sources before heading to any trail:

PR 1 – Pico do Arieiro to Pico de Ruivo

One of the most scenic hikes I’ve come across is the trail connecting Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo – and from what I’ve read, it’s expected to fully reopen in 2026.

From my research, the trail starts at the Pico do Arieiro viewpoint and leads you all the way to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak on the island. Unfortunately, when I visited, a part of the trail was still closed, so I only had the chance to walk the famous “Stairways to Heaven” section and a short stretch beyond. It’s also possible to hike it in reverse, but most people begin from Pico do Arieiro because it’s a little bit easier.

Tips for the trail, if you catch some clouds the experience will be more beautiful. The best time to visit is very early in the morning or late in the day at sunset.

Keep in mind that this is a moderately challenging trek. The route covers about 11 km with roughly 700 meters of elevation gain, so a good level of fitness is recommended. You’ll also encounter narrow paths and steep sections, so proper footwear and caution are essential.

  • Duration: 6-7h.

PR6 – Levada das 25 Fontes

This levada hike is one of the most popular and easiest hikes on the island of Madeira. As you follow the levada path, you’ll once again be amazed by the rich diversity of the forest vegetation. The surroundings create an almost jungle – like, exotic atmosphere that makes this trail truly special.

The parking is available along the ER105 road, where the trail begins towards Casa de Abrigo do Rabaçal(open between 10AM – 5PM). From here, start by heading to the viewpoint of the Risco Waterfall. And afterwards, continue towards the famous 25 Fontes waterfall, where flow into a clear, stunning pool. The water is beautifully clean, and the entire setting is simply beautiful.

25 Fontes Waterfall

The entire hike is a round trip. Once you return to Casa de Abrigo do Rabaçal, you can also explore PR6.6 – Túnel do Rabaçal, a short trail leading to a tunnel. Just be careful not to continue all the way to the end of that path – instead, check out the other entrance of the tunnel, enjoy the views, and then return to the same route.

PR 8 – Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço

The PR8 hike feels completely different from the other trails. The views along the charming coast are incredibly beautiful and offer a unique perspective of the island. If you follow all the way to the end, you’ll be rewarded with one of the best panoramas at the easternmost point of the island.

For the best experience, visit at sunrise(before the crowds arrive) or later in the day when it’s quieter.

PR 9 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde

Levada do Caldeirão Verde is one of the most spectacular levada walks in Madeira, offering breathtaking views of lush forests, waterfalls and narrow tunnels carved into the rock. The trail starts in Queimadas Forest Park and follows a historic irrigation channel through the heart of the island’s UNESCO-listed Laurisilva forest, a setting so enchanting it truly feels like a fairy tail.

This hike is a must-do on the island, as it offers a bit of everything, stunning scenery, multiple tunnels, and some narrow pathways along the way. Don’t worry though, as it is overall an easy and accessible hike.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to experience this trail myself. However, I’ve done the research for you, so below you’ll find everything you need to know before going.

2. Discover the under water world while snorkeling

Hiking and snorkeling were my favourites activities. Snorkeling gives you the opportunity to explore the underwater world in a simple and accessible way. You don’t need to know how to swim, as you can still see beautiful fish close to the shore. That’s one of the best things about Madeira – nature is so easy to enjoy, both on land and in the water. I have done only at the Praia do Garajau but if I had the time I would do it at one beach that I’ve seen on the trail on PR 8 – Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço.

3. Explore Funchal, the capital city of Madeira, and it’s Tropical Gardens

Funchal, the capital of Madeira archipelago, is a really scenic destination. The city is filled with vibrant colors, lush gardens, and exotic flowers at every corner. With its welcoming and peaceful atmosphere, shaped by the warmth of its people. Even though the beauty of Madeira stands besides Funchal, if you have enough time you can visit some highlights of the city.

Here are some of the highlights of the city:

  • Monte Palace Tropical Garden – you can take the Funchal cable car(check the official site for prices and opening hours here) up to the garden(check the official site of Monte Palace Tropical Garden) & Church on the Mount which is next to the Monte Palace Tropical Garden;
  • After the visit of the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, go down to the Carreiros do Monte, check the official site here, be prepared to have cash because it’s possible to not pay with the card.
  • Mercado dos Lavradores(Farmers Market) – located in the heart of Funchal. Check on Google Maps for the opening hours. Go early before the tourists are coming and it gets really crowded;
  • Funchal Cathedral.

If you have more time in the city, you can check Best Things to Do in Funchal: Complete City Guide.

4. Stop by the Miradouros

Madeira Island is famous for it’s Miradouros(panoramic viewpoints), offering some of the best views in Portugal. While there are countless viewpoints scattered across the island, only a few are truly worth a stop. For the best experience, plan your visit on a clear day when the visibility is high, at the sunrise or sunset depending on the viewpoint’s orientation. Here are some of my favourite miradouros:

  • Rocha do Naivo – Teleférico da Rocha do Navio
  • Guindaste Viewpoint
  • Miradouro da Eira do Serrado

5. Visit the traditional Santana houses

I highly recommend visiting the traditional Santana houses – they are one of the highlights of the island. These charming, colorful houses offer a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the locals and reflect the island’s history. It’s also an easy and quick stop, as they are located right in the center of the village.

A glimpse of history of the Madeira Island, just enjoy the traditional houses of Santana village.

6. Spend some time at the beach

Don’t miss one of the most loved activities on Madeira island – spending some time at the beach. If the weather is on your side, be sure to add some time by the sea. Madeira offers a variety of beautiful and exotic beaches. Most are covered with pebbles and only a few have sandy shores.

The best beaches I visited are:

  • Praia do Garajau – a pebble beach, so I recommend bringing water shoes for a more comfortable experience. Near the beach, you’ll finde the statue of Cristo Rei, and you’ll also need to take a cable car to reach the beach;
  • Piscinas Naturais do Seixal – a more scenic covered in black sand and natural volcanic pools.
One of the few sandy beaches on Madeira Island, Seixal Beach with it's striking black sand and volcanic landscape.

7. Go whale and dolphins watching

Another great activity on the island is going whale and dolphin watching. Even though sightings aren’t guaranteed, it’s still a truly beautiful experience. Being out on the ocean gives you a different perspective of Madeira, with stunning views of the coastline.

Boat Trips & Info

You can take these tours from Marina do Funchal or Marina da Calheta, and they usually last around 3 hours and many include a stop swimming, so don’t forget your swimsuit. Here are the lists with the agencies. Try to book an early morning tour to make the most if the rest of your day. Be aware to check the reviews of the agencies before you book. You can either book online or through local travel agencies in Funchal.

8. Watching the sunset is one of the best things to do in Madeira

The sunsets in Madeira are truly amazing. I hadn’t planned to catch our first sunset at Cascada dos Anjos, but its definitely something that should be on your bucket list. It’s such a beautiful way to explore the island. I highly recommend to see the sunset from Pico de Areeiro, Cascata dos Anjos and Jardim do Mar.

One of the most spectacular sunsets that I've ever experienced was on Pico de Areeiro. For sure, one of the best things to do on Madeira Island.

I’ve created one list with the Best Places to Watch the Sunset in Madeira and the ones that I would do it if I had the time. I’m not a morning person, so for the sunrise I didn’t create a list. 🙂

9. Visit local villages

Madeira’s local villages have a charming, rustic feel, while some also offer a touch of luxury. There are a few villages that I especially loved, each with its own unique character and atmosphere. There’s also one village I didn’t get to visit, but I would like to do it when I’ll come back.

These are the most beautiful villages that I really enjoyed:

  • Câmara de Lobos;
  • Jardim do Mar;
  • Santana;
  • Sao Vicente – I didn’t visit this village, but I’d loved to next time, especially to see the Capelinha de Nossa Senhora de Fátima.

10. Catch Fanal Forest in the mist

Fanal Forest is known for it’s ancient, twisted trees and frequent mist. I had seen so many photos before visiting, but unfortunately, I didn’t get to experience the fog myself. The secret is to arrive early in the morning, when the mist drifts between the trees. It creates a slightly eerie, almost magical atmosphere – like stepping into a fantasy landscape.

11. Enjoy the traditional dishes from Madeira

One of the best ways to experience Madeira is through it’s traditional cuisine. The island offers a variety of delicious local dishes, from fresh seafood to regional specialties, all full of flavor. Trying the local food, it’s about discovering the culture and traditions of the island. Whether you choose a small local restaurant or a more refined place, it’s definitely an experience you shouldn’t miss.

Some traditional dishes:

  • Sopa de Tomate e Cebola;
  • Lapas;
  • Bolo de Caco;
  • Prego.

12. Book an adventurous activity

To be honest, I only booked a dolphins and whales tour, but Madeira Island has something for everyone. If you really enjoy doing activities with adrenaline, there are plenty of options to choose from:

  • Scuba Diving;
  • Kayaking;
  • Canyoning;
  • Bike Tours.

For a more relaxed activity, you can try birdwatching.

You can book these experiences on GetYourGuide or check on the Visit Madeira website for the list of companies that are doing this type of activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Madeira?

The best time to visit Madeira is during spring: April – June, and early autumn: September – October, when the weather is pleasant. Personally I visited at the beginning of September and the weather was perfect for hiking and also swimming.

How many days are needed to visit the island?

Ideally, you should plan at least 7 days to explore Madeira properly. This allows enough time to see most of the island.

How to visit the island?

The best way to explore Madeira is by renting a car, as it gives you the flexibility to reach viewpoints, villages, and natural attractions. Keep in mind that the roads are very steep and winding, so it’s worth choosing a reliable car and opting for full insurance for extra peace of mind.

How do you get around the island without a car?

Even though is more flexible to enjoy the island with a car, there are plenty of guided tours or local buses, which connect the main towns and attractions.

Where to stay on the island?

Funchal is the best base, offering a wide range of hotels, restaurants, and easy access to tours. If you prefer a more rustic or quieter experience, you can also stay in areas like Câmara de Lobos or Caniço, which are close to Funchal.

In my experience, I stayed in Caniço, which was nice, but next time I would choose Funchal instead. Parking can be quite difficult in some areas, especially in the city centre. Another important thing to consider is that if you’re the only driver and want to enjoy a glass of local wine in Funchal, it can be less convenient compared to staying in a walkable area like Funchal.
